Identity theft is an increasingly pervasive – and costly – crime.
The last available statistics from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre indicate that the total number of victims of identity theft in Canada has gone up every year for the last three years, and so have the total dollars lost as a result.
What can industries do to ensure that the identification they’re processing is the real deal?
For a growing number of businesses, the answer is the enhanced security provided by the 3M™ CR5400 Double-Sided ID1 Reader – a.k.a. “The Toaster.”
The source of identity theft.
The culprits of identity theft crimes are mainly off-shore counterfeiting rings, as well as some smaller counterfeit operations in Canada and the United States. These operations use scanning and image manipulation technology, advanced software, and printers in order to produce counterfeit driver’s licenses that are very difficult to discern from valid driver’s licenses.
These fake IDs are being successfully passed in a variety of critical day-to-day situations. As a result, an increasingly large number of industries—from telecommunications to the hotel and hospitality industry—are seeing growing financial losses.
New tool offers identity theft protection.
Affectionately referred to as “The Toaster” for its resemblance to a miniature version of the kitchen appliance, the CR5400 from 3M provides businesses and organizations with a point-of-interaction security solution that can be used to perform a multitude of complex identity checks in a very short amount of time.
The device, which is small enough to sit on any desk or retail counter, reads photo ID cards by scanning the front and back of the card simultaneously. Using infrared, visible, and ultraviolet light, the CR5400 checks all of a photo ID card’s security features and, with third-party software, can check the coded information on the back of the card and cross references it with the name and address listed on the front to ensure that they are consistent.
It can even be used to store these images and compare them against a digital document library or interface with 3M™ Live Face Identification System to perform a facial match with the person who handed over the card.
Best of all, the CR5400 is simple to use. There is no wrong way to insert an ID card into the CR5400’s slot, so staff need only to drop the card in and wait. A real-time LED display indicates when scanning has started and, when the fully-immersed ID has been read, it pops up, just like—you guessed it—a toaster.
