Helping improve moisture-associated skin damage treatment.
With our aging population, moisture-associated skin damage (MASD) is becoming an increasing concern for home care patients.
While there are treatments available, they do not offer optimal comfort or results for the patient, or efficiency for the care provider.
That’s why we teamed up with the 3M Canada team to clinically evaluate the 3M™ Cavilon™ Advanced Skin Protectant. Our goal was to determine if this product could:
- Enhance patient experience and outcomes
- Help increase the effectiveness of home care providers
- Help reduce the cost of home care supplies
Here is what we found.
What is moisture-associated skin damage and what are the causes?
MASD can happen when the skin is exposed to moisture and irritants for a prolonged period of time. This causes the skin to become inflamed and erode which causes conditions, like incontinence associated dermatitis. In Ontario alone, 60% of home care patients suffer with incontinence-related MASD, and elderly patients are particularly susceptible.1
What is the most typical moisture-associated skin damage treatment?
Most traditional moisture association skin damage treatments include creams, films, powders, and impregnated gauze. These products can be thick, messy and even gritty, and can obscure your view of the patient’s skin.
As a result, traditional moisture-associated skin damage treatments can be uncomfortable for the patient and labour-intensive for the care provider, without offering the level of protection you hope for.
How is 3MTM Cavilon™ Advanced Skin Protectant different from other skin protectant products on the market?
3M™ Cavilon™ Advanced Skin Protectant is a skin protectant designed to help create a highly durable, ultra-thin, transparent barrier with elastomeric properties. It lasts up to seven days, is hypoallergenic, latex, and alcohol free.
Based on the results of the clinical evaluation, what were some of the benefits of 3M™ Cavilon™ Advanced Skin Protectant?
The results of the clinical evaluation show that 3M™ Cavilon™ Advanced Skin Protectant may fulfill an unmet need for patients with moisture-associated skin damage. Both care providers and patients rated the product highly across several considerations. This includes:
- The effectiveness of the product itself: application, even when the skin is wet or weak
- The efficiency for the care provider: ease of application, number of reapplications required
- Patient comfort: when the product is applied, worn, and removed
These results mirror the results of other statistically relevant clinical studies.
